Magical Beginnings

As a creative writer and artist, I enjoy writing coming-of-age teen stories that combine magic realism with honest depictions of teenage life.

I started writing the first book of this series, The Very True Story of Aveline Beetle; Magical Beginnings, when my three daughters were growing up, and also reading the Harry Potter series, the Twilight series, and The Hunger Games, among so many others–many of which I read along with them of course. And I wanted for them, and other young girls to have additional female heroines that would empower them to be their creative selves, as I truly believe that we all have that creative side within.

Through my many years of working in retail–where folks more than routinely told me their entire life stories–I learned so much about how other people and the world around us works. And no matter where I venture to today, I’m forever learning through the stories they are still telling me–happy, sad, funny, and everything in between. I guess you could say that I’m a natural born listener and people watcher.

I love being out in nature, working in my jewelry studio, and spending time with family. Currently, I reside in the teeny tiny town of Lancaster, Wisconsin with my cat Luna, who inspires me to continue to be curious about this magical and ever–changing world that we live in.

Aveline Beetle, a magical but hesitantly magical teenage witch, is suddenly sent away by her mum, Lydia, from Choquel Castle on the secret Island of Normandy, which is a safe haven for witches and wizards, and not known to Ordinaries, a.k.a nonmagical peeps. Aveline can’t imagine why her mum would be sending her sooo far away to stay with her quirky little Aunt Hildy in the tiny, teeny town of Farsworth, Wisconsin for an entire summer on her own, and without having ever even visited there before.

It’s decided that Aveline will be landing by way of a flying retro red Schwinn, as suggested by Aunt Hildy, as “that’s what everyone does here.” Aveline is off to a wobbly start however, when Squiggles, the hot air balloon and transportation navigator of Normandy Island, gets his directions a bit confused, and accidentally drops Aveline off at the Farsworth annual July 4th parade. And what a splash she makes among all of the Ordinaries.

After being locked within Aunt Hildy’s house, fondly referred to as the Bell—for days on end—by direction of Aveline’s mum and her Aunt Hildy, Aveline discovers that many of the answers to why she was sent there lie within the rooms of the house inside the Bell, which aren’t really regular rooms at all. In fact, the portals she finds, leads her to the sinister truth behind all of the secrecy around Normandy Island, and why Aunt Hildy has begun to accidentally give away clues. The night terrors that frequently visit Aveline also mean something, but Aveline has yet to figure that out. And at the same time, does she really want to know?

When Aveline meets another girl her age who is also staying with her aunt in Farsworth, things around them really begin to take on a life of their own. And on Aveline’s fifteenth birthday, Alice secretly gives Aveline a vintage kaleidoscope that was given to her by her own aunt, that holds the key to even more mysteries.

On one of their secret portal trips back to Normandy Island, Aveline and Alice find a lens for the kaleidoscope, making the kaleidoscope even more powerful than it had been to them previously—with the potential to change the world around them, and that of others around them. And now, Aveline and Alice are forced to face the fact that the Grimm Keepers, a.k.a. nasty black magic beings, who seem to be tracking them, want their treasured kaleidoscope, and will stop at nothing to steal it away from them.

Handing over the kaleidoscope seems so easy, but as Aveline and Alice find out when they are forced to face the dark magic of Subious, the Grimm Keeper Leader, and his crew, the seemingly uneventful summer they had started out with, would forever change them–as would the seemingly ordinary things they found in Farsworth–that were not really ordinary at all.

Through their adventures together, Aveline, Alice, and Aunt Hildy’s familiar Maisy, the luscious long haired white cat, find that they are a force to be reckoned with. Not only do they find answers to deeply held secrets, they also decide to take on a mission that no one could have ever prepared them for—not even the ever powerful and magical adults in their lives.
